I’ve been working on a digital drawing/painting these past couple of days. It’s supposed to be one of my cats; Benji, though I haven’t decided where to go from here with this piece. Undecided about pretty much everything else! So just gonna let randomness lead my way and it’ll be what it’ll be.

Finally some new art!

I’ve had an artistic block for a little while, especially with the traditional art part. So I decided to take a break and kept busy with my guitar. But there’s only so much playing you (well, I) can do before your fingers start aching…so put the guitar away and decided to pick up on my digital art stuff. I started on this piece months ago, but would always feel stuck when I was working, so I could only do a little at a time, because I either had no idea of how to progress or I had way too many ideas circling like a psychotic cycle in my mind, making it hell to make choices. But yesterday and today while I’ve been working on this, it all just made sense. I just knew what to do, how to do it and it all just came together. I’m quite happy how this one turned out too

“The Sky’s the Limit”. You’ve probably heard that expression a few times already, and growing up (especially throughout high school and then university) you’re bombarded with the “Follow your dreams, reach for the stars, wah wah wah….” Type of mantras from parents, teachers etc. It sounds so pretty, as if following your dreams means choosing an easy path and then everything is all peach and roses and pink elephants on a sunny day. Right? Well. So we try. We fail. We (hopefully) try again. And then while we’re trying, 90% of the time people will think you’re being a fool for not getting a “real job”, for not giving up on something you keep failing at, for not being “realistic” etc, when a lot of those people were the ones encouraging us to pursue what we want in the first place. So…with that in mind, this little creation was born.

It’s no secret that I rediscovered my favorite band, Yellowcard, again. So, whatever goes on in my life, whether it’s influences music-wise, or a book I might be really into, a movies I’ve seen, feelings I’m going through, disturbing little thoughts I need to project digitally on a screen or a paper sheet to get it out of my head – it all represents a small part of me, my life and in a way who I am. So…in other words, hope you deal, ‘coz I’m having a dose of YC at the moment.

On to the real ranting of the day…

My friend on Twitter had requested for me to do a drawing of Yellowcard’s guitarist Ryan Mendez a while ago. So she found me this really cool reference photo that I used (all credits to the owner of the photo!), which was originally black and white, but I wanted to add some color on the drawing once I had everything done, only because I felt that though there was enough contrasts in the drawing, Ryan kind of “faded” away due to the background I made up. So, as you might have noticed, my “thing” (or whatever you wanna call it) for a while has been to throw in just a few hues into random parts of the drawing to kind of bring out a character or a figure. This time I decided to keep it simple. Randomly went on Twitter and asked for red or blue, and got a lot of red- responses (though I doubt you all knew what the freakaleak I was on about ) SO…blah blah blah, and red became the color of his shirt. Gotta love Twitter.

The background…interesting, because I had never any intentions of making an exact copy of the photo (in which case I could just have posted the freaking photo, riiiight? Right). So made a black/grey scaled background that hopefully brings more life to the drawing and gives it a “stage” kind of vibe to it.

The White Stripes

Little Miss Temple is done, dunzo, finito! I’m relieved because working on her striped dress has resulted in a major freaking headache; it became freaking MAZE to deal with, at one point I didn’t know if I was drawing the black stripes or if I was really focusing on keeping white areas for white stripes. Nightmare. so not gonna write more right now, as most of what I had to say about this drawing is included in my previous post! Had a small freak out moment when I realized that I had to draw glass (bottle + the glass in her hand)..I don’t think I’ve ever done that before. Ever. Dreaded moment, so I left those area blank for a while (yeah right, as the Drawing Fairy would magically place a drawn glass and bottle the next time I grabbed my sketch pad…not gonna happen, kiddos), but dealt with it yesterday. I think it turned out pretty okay, right?

Little Miss Curls (WIP)

Sitting here, chilling to Kings of Leon while working on my third drawing this year (while eating the most important meal of the day; chocolate. Nom, nom, nom!). It’s also number three on my new little project that I intend to focus on the upcoming couple of months. Not going to get into details yet, but this one’s fun, fun, fun, as it’s a portrait of Shirley Temple as a child. Now, for all of you newbies that haven’t been around much (just trying to sound old and wise, but I’m not old enough to have been around during Temple’s big era either…just go with it) – Shirley Temple became a very famous childhood actress way back in the 1930′s at only 4 years old. When I was little (think 80′s/early 90′s, people) I would always watch her in the movie “Heidi“, so that’s how I was introduced to this little girl. Though I’m not too familiar with her work, I’m actually more fmiliar to her as am iconic figure, especially in the states.

Anyway, been working on this drawing for about an hour now and I’m currently trying to make her lovely curls justice and I just can’t help but think about that TLC pageant show; “Toddlers & Tiaras”, coz this kid looks like she could’ve been one of those spoiled brats on the show. But now I’m totally going out of the loop with this Temple drawing topic, so gonna hush-hush now and go on with the drawing.

Inspiration from the past

“We’re off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz!”

This was so much fun to draw! Judy Garland’s character; Dorothy Gale, of the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz“. Growing up I had two favorite movies that came to influence me and work as inspiration to some of my drawings, paintings and digital creations later on in life. Those movies were (the animated original version of) “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Wizard of Oz” (from 1982). I think I saw the original “The Wizard of Oz” when I was much older. And though I love the 80′s version, the original one is much more naïve and I absolutely adore the Lion in that one
I love the characters in those two movies; they’re crazy and not so countable as characters usually are in children’s movies. Especially in “Alice in Wonderland”…that movie infatuated me; I could spend hours in the yard imagining I was in that colorful, mystical world, where random flowers became talking friends and insects became different characters…*sigh*…yeah, I wanna be 6 again. You know…when there’s no end to the possibilities. I even remember believing there was a secret place called Oz, where only children could go to, as long as they believed in it – and obviously I did. I was obsessed with the stories and I read the book when I got a little older. Good times, bring’em back!

Anyway, I was planning to add some color on her dress, but decided not to, because I like the “old school” look to it all. If I’d thrown in a random color, I think it’s look a bit more modern. So, skipped that. I quite like how her hair turned out, as I think I succeeded in creating some sort of flow in her waves/curls.

Ok, ’nuff rambling. Watching “Cast Away” (I love Tom Hanks movies)…every time I see something from FedEx or volleyballs, I think ok desert islands and Wilson. One of my dogs even has a small ball with a face on, and to name it Wilson was just a natural choice. Now my dog will “go fetch Wilson!”…oh, dang, she’s smart.

WIP – Dorothy

Started on this A4 sized drawing last night. Been working on it for a few hours and for the first time ever, I’m actually enjoining drawing the hair on a person Not sure whether I’ll leave this in black/white/grey. Might add some blue to it.

Working on a small “collection” of drawings of different classic stars from the past. Kind of planning to pimp up my walls, make a theme out of it and, yeah…who needs Andy Warhol prints when you can do your own wall doodle, right?

Timeless beauty

It’s not often I do portraits of females for whatever reason, though they’re the most fun to work on. I had a lot of fun drawing Elizabeth Taylor as a child.

I can’t claim I grew up watching her movies, but for random reasons these past couple of years I’ve found myself infatuated in really old movies that I guess are Hollywood classics today. Movies starring my favorite legend; James Dean, but also Gregory Peck, Aubrey Hepburn, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo etc. There’s something about that era, those actors and actresses, which I’ve never really been able to find in movies and celebs of today. Today every celebrity is so accessible in a way that former celebrities weren’t. I think they were more respected back in the day than they are right now. Today we just sign in to Twitter and can read anything about our favorite artist coming straight from them. A lot of them will even interact back to you, and though I admit I thought that was the coolest thing EVER the first time my fave singer wrote me, years later it’s not that big of a deal (though it is still nice).

Anyway, I’m thinking about getting this framed along with one of my James Dean drawings I did last year and give them a little space on one of my walls

I hope everyone’s had a cool 2012 so far. Day three almost done, day four…bring it.

New year, new art…just staring of the year by drawing the legendary Elizabeth Taylor as a child, while watching the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz“.

I absolutely adore this movie along with “Alice in Wonderland“. I always find myself getting inspiration from these movies… So once I’m find with this drawing, might sketch a few ideas for a digital drawing

Last week I was watching “The Giant” starring Liz Taylor. I’ve always been infatuated by the classic actors and actresses; there just something exquisite, timeless and mysterious about those celebrities, whose grace will never be reachable for celebs of today. I couldn’t care any less about celebrities now. So decides to put all if my other unfinished art aside and do this childhood portrait of Taylor, just to get 2012 started the artsy fartsy way.

Dear 2012…pour some sugar on me!

It’s been quite the year for me, even though I’ve had my really low moments…but you kind of need those bad moments in order to really appreciate the good ones, like, gee, I don’t know…going to a Roger Waters “The Wall” gig (Pink Floyd), like I did…unforgettable…Oh, and all the travels I’ve made and new friends along the way.

BUT! I hope that next year will be a great one for You (yes YOU) and me. Because if it is, then we’ll be a bit happier with our lives and if we’re happier, then I’m pretty freaking sure that the world will be a little bit more pleasant to live in

I don’t know what to expect of 2012…it’s crazy that this year is already over in a few hours here in Europe. And with the holidays gone after tonight, people will start making plans for the summer – and so it goes on until suddenly it’s December 31st again and I’m sitting somewhere, scratching my head with a frown, wondering where the freakaleak my year went…

No New Years resolution. Because resolutions become goals, goals need rules that you stick to so you reach the end of the line and rules are made to be broken. Especially New Year resolution ones. So, instead of ONE goal, I just keep hoping for the best, hoping 2012 will be MY year (I loved 2009…) And if I can’t have it my way…like all my random dreams coming true; marrying James Franco, winning the lottery, chilling with Banksy while listening to (a non skirt-over-pants-wearing) Jared Leto have an acoustic session for us in my living room while I sip on a tasty drink of Baileys…then I just hope I’ll have a successful year with my family and with being creative. Sounds pretty fair, don’t you think? So until then…

Have a great NYE, whether you’ll be stuck at home feeling depressed because “everyone else is doing SOMETHING” (trust me – everyone isn’t, but everyone thinks that about everyone else ) or if you’re at some grand party getting too wasted to even remember that embarrassing thing you did on NYE that everyone’s talking about (and wishing you had stayed at home doing nothing at all, like everyone else who wish they did something that night…) Vicious cycle, huh?

Talk to you kiddos next year.
